From Borrego Springs I'm off to the Slabs where I had to go through Brawley, CA and get my Walmart fix for the month.
Slab City http://gathering.digihitch.com/slabs.php is definitely a one-of-a-kind place. There are literally hundreds or more of RV's, tents and shanties where some people call home year round even with summer temps in the 100's. It's probably one of the only really rent free places you can live in the U.S. Check out the photos below and you will find some real bargains if you're in the market for a second (or in some cases, first home). There are many styles available, even a duplex and a a fixer upper can be had. Don't forget to check out the local artwork (water tank) by a fellow who is very talented but wants to remain anonymous. Most residents preferred not to be in the photos. Hmmmm, I wonder why that is??? There is even a pet cemetery. I hope it isn't like the one in Stephen King's book, because Trucker and I are parked very close to it. Also, note The Range, a local entertainment center where you can catch live acts and music, but don't inhale the smoke emanating in the vicinity or you may not find your way home. It's really easy to get lost out here.
